Deafness, partial or total, is a pathological situation which seriously compromises relationships and those affected risk exclusion from every social network. One of the pioneers in developing an innovative and structured educational system for non-hearing people was the priest Filippo Smaldone. In 1885, in Lecce, a city in the far south of Italy, he founded a school run by a congregation of nuns, for young people with this disability. Even though much progress has been made in this sector, there is still much to be done if we are to achieve true and complete educational and social inclusion of deaf people. Appropriate training of school staff and the use of social media as an educational and social middleman can be instrumental in this.
