This paper analyzes the concept of pragmatic competence and how teaching and learning individual elements of everyday language can contribute to improving this competence. The acquisition of pragmatic competence is considered one of the main goals of foreign language learning and is therefore gaining in importance in foreign language teaching. In this work, the notion of pragmatic competence is defined and the elements of everyday language that can help in the development of natural-sounding speech in foreign language learners are described. Pragmatic elements are not only important because they make the language sound more natural. Some of them can also be extremely helpful for learners in dealing with certain communicative situations. In addition, three textbooks for German as a foreign language used in Croatian schools are analyzed. The aim of the analysis is to examine the extent to which elements of everyday language are represented in DaF textbooks. It is analyzed which expressions from everyday language appear in textbooks, how often they occur and whether that is enough for German learners to remember them without great difficulty.
