In the contemporary literary universe, few works manage to embody the present existential and ecological crises with as much acuity as Imbolo Mbue’s How Beautiful We Were. This novel, far beyond a simple allegory of exploitation, stands as a profound meditation on the concepts of the ethics of memory and the dialectic of becoming. Modernity, with its profit imperatives and historical amnesia, has long relegated collective memory to a mere archive of the past and becoming to a linear progression. Vast theoretical frameworks, from Husserl’s phenomenology to Foucault’s critique of power, have probed consciousness and historicity. However, the way in which the postcolonial narrative, by its very nature, engages in a dialogue with these concepts to subvert their premises remains a field of research where literature offers unique insights. If modernity, through its extractivist logic, fragments identities and annihilates collective memory, making the reconstruction of being impossible, how, then, does a community manage to constitute itself as an ethical subject through an act of memory to inscribe itself in a becoming that transcends loss? The current critical reflection aims to decipher this question through a phenomenological reading of Mbue’s novel. This method, by focusing on the lived experience of the characters, will help to explore the foundations of memory and becoming as they manifest in the consciousness of the Kosawa community. The relevance of this approach lies in its ability to reveal layers of meaning that escape a simple sociological analysis. Its limitations, however, reside in the risk of an interpretation that could favor philosophical discourse at the expense of the materiality of existence. The study of this work will be structured around two axes: “Ethics of memory as the foundation of action and Identity” and “Dialectic of becoming between resilience and despair”. The former will show how memory, far from being a simple recollection, becomes a moral imperative that guides resistance. The latter will examine the processes of community transformation, showing that becoming is a continuous movement between loss and the creation of meaning.
