Abstract

The Greek midwife, the person of the Virgin Mary and God, this good and charismatic personality, truly dedicated to her Midwifery art, stood on the highest pedestal of esteem, something that required bravery in those bad times, where means and technological assistance were lacking. Until the Renaissance, medieval prejudices prevailed regarding obstetric and gynecological issues, which were left in the hands of practical midwives with little or no education. Thus, Medicine was forced to deal with Obstetrics and Gynecology and take radical positions on the problems of women's health. The midwife, with her continuous education, excellent technical training and dedication to her duty, has an extremely important role in the health education not only of the patients, but also within the family and the community. Today, due to the rapid socio-economic changes, the conditions in the field of health have changed radically. We must not forget that midwives have rights and these are sacred, because their life is hard and responsible.
